Luca Magnussen Secures Impressive Podium on McLaren Trophy Debut
The 16-year-old Danish talent claimed a strong second-place finish in his first-ever sports car race as the opening round of McLaren Trophy Europe took place at Monza.
Luca Magnussen enjoyed a debut weekend far beyond expectations when the opening round of McLaren Trophy Europe was held at the iconic Monza circuit in Italy. The Danish motorsport talent shared a McLaren Artura GT4 with British driver Callum Davies, and the duo secured an impressive second-place finish in the very first race of the season.
Davies laid the foundation for the podium result by climbing from seventh to third place during the opening half of the race before handing the car over to Magnussen. The 16-year-old Dane maintained the strong pace, quickly closed the gap to the car running second and executed a decisive pass in the notorious chicane at the end of the start-finish straight. From there, he comfortably controlled the position all the way to the chequered flag.
Magnussen was equally impressive in the weekend’s second race. Starting from 16th on the grid, he rapidly worked his way through the field before handing the car over to Davies from ninth place midway through the race. Contact with a rival, however, resulted in damage that required an extended pit stop to repair the front bodywork. Davies rejoined in 19th position and once again began charging through the field. Two major incidents subsequently triggered a safety car period and later a red flag, leaving the pair classified 14th at the finish.
"It’s been a super-cool weekend! I’m really happy, both for myself and for the team. The first race went really well, Callum got off to a great start, and I had a great battle at the end where I was really able to show my pace. In the second race, I also got off to a strong start, but then got hit while attempting an overtake, which unfortunately cost us time in the pit lane. Even so, the pace was good, and overall it’s been a debut weekend beyond expectations. Now it’s all about maintaining the momentum and continuing to develop. A huge thank you to the entire team and all my sponsors," said Luca Magnussen.
Magnussen’s next challenge will be the second round of McLaren Trophy Europe, which will take place as a support event to the legendary 24 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps on June 26-27.
