Luca Magnussen claims impressive double podium at Spa-Francorchamps

The 16-year-old racing talent claimed two third-place finishes at the iconic Belgian circuit, moving into the lead of the McLaren Trophy Europe championship.

After securing a podium finish on his series debut at Monza in May, Luca Magnussen delivered another standout performance as the second round of the McLaren Trophy Europe season took place at Spa-Francorchamps last weekend. Together with his Paddock Motorsport teammate, Callum Davies, the young Dane claimed two third-place finishes to move to the top of the provisional championship standings.

The result was particularly impressive given that Magnussen had never raced at the legendary Belgian Formula 1 circuit before. Nevertheless, he quickly found his rhythm, steadily improving throughout the practice sessions before setting the third-fastest time in the final session.

That momentum, however, did not immediately carry over into qualifying. Two of Magnussen's fastest laps were deleted for track limits, while the car also suffered from understeer, leaving the McLaren driver to start the opening race of the weekend from 12th on the grid.

"Fortunately, we managed to get the car into a much better window and found a setup that really worked. We spent a lot of time analysing video and data to understand where Callum and I could improve, and that made a huge difference. Combined with a fantastic strategy from the team, it all came together and we finished third, scoring some very valuable championship points," said Luca Magnussen.

The second qualifying session of the weekend proved equally challenging. With teammate Callum Davies behind the wheel, an overheated fuel pump brought the session to an early end, forcing the duo to start the second race from the back of the grid.

"Thankfully, we solved the problem before the race and managed to fight our way back. Callum drove a really strong opening stint and gained several positions before handing the car over to me. We were running 12th when I got in, but then the race was neutralised by a very long safety car period, which meant I only had four racing laps to make progress," explained Luca Magnussen.

Despite having just four racing laps available, the flying Dane produced an outstanding recovery drive, charging through the field to secure another third-place finish for the team. The double podium haul was enough to move the pair into the lead of the provisional championship standings, where they now hold a two-point advantage over rivals Target Racing.

"It feels absolutely fantastic! It's the first time I've ever led a championship, and the fact that it's a European championship makes it even more special. A huge thank you to the whole team, to my teammate, and to all my sponsors and partners. Now it's all about building on this momentum and continuing to work hard to fight for the title," Magnussen said.

The next round of the McLaren Trophy Europe championship will take place at Misano World Circuit on July 18-19.
